ON THE MORNING OF THE second day, the small clearing was a buzz of activity. Messengers came to tell the lairds how close their men were and how much wine they were bringing with them.

Neil showed Mayze and Dugan how to finish the itching powder. He made a funnel out of a leaf and poured powder into two empty flasks. Next, he chose the two men he would send inside the wall and had them practice flicking red dye so it would make tiny spots on skin. With any luck, the intruders would believe they had the same plague that killed Neil’s grandparent’s years before. A dead body would make it a lot more frightening, but...

He had to tell Laird Forbes three times why he was not sending in more food. Full stomachs needed more wine to get drunk, but the enraged Forbes was having difficulty accepting that excuse. All he cared about was his wife. Forbes sat with his head in his hands most of the afternoon. The waiting was unbearable for them all. At last, everything was ready and Neil finally got a couple of hours of sleep.
